I listened to the old man’s spiel about growing up poor and desperate and how, through hard work and sacrifice he had pulled himself up by the bootstraps. I tried hard not to roll my eyes nor to avert his gaze. He had “forgotten” to mention something we all knew to be true; someone had opened the doors of opportunity for him, and when he strutted through them, he slammed them shut and threw away the key.
